General Motors India, the Indian unit of US based autogiant General Motors, is planning to launch a new 800CC version of its Spark model in the Indian market by next year. The move has been taken in the view of high demand of mini B-segment cars in the Indian market.
After the ongoing phase-out of Maruti 800 from the major Indian cities, the Alto has become the largest selling 800cc car in the Indian market, registering a monthly sale of over 30,000 cars. In comparison to Alto, the Chevrolet’s lowest priced Spark 1.0L model clocked sales of only 4000+ units. Sensing an opportunity, GM India is now planning to fight for space with Alto.
The 800CC Spark model is expected to be rolled-out in the price segment of sub Rs 2lakh. Besides Alto, the car will be competing with Hyundai’s upcoming 800 CC car that will be rolled-out by the end of year 2011.
The new Spark 800 will be a trimmed-down version of the existing 1.0L version of Spark. Initially, the car will be rolled-out in a petrol version only, followed by CNG and LPG versions after a few months.
The all new 800CC Spark will further strengthen Chevrolet's position in the Indian market along with enhancing its market share through driving high volumes. The launch of Spark 800cc will further provide the Indian customers with an alternative to Alto.
